1 Kings 18:17-40 GW When he saw Elijah, Ahab said, "Is that you, you troublemaker of Israel?" (18) Elijah answered, "I haven't troubled Israel. You and your father's family have done it by disobeying the LORD's  ( יהוה ) commands and following the various Baal gods. (19) Order all Israel to gather around me on Mount Carmel. And bring the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table." (20) Ahab sent word to all the Israelites and brought the prophets together on Mount Carmel. (21) Elijah stood up in front of all the people and asked them, "How long will you try to have it both ways? If the LORD   ( ) is God, follow him; if Baal is God, follow him." The people didn't say a word. (22) So Elijah told the people, "I'm the only surviving prophet of the LORD  ( ), but there are 450 prophets of Baal. (23) Give us two bulls. Let the prophets of Baal choose one for themselves, cut it into pieces, lay it on the wood, but not set it on fire. I'll do the same with the other bull. (24) "You call on the name of your gods, but I will call on the name of the LORD  ( ). The god who answers by fire is the real God." All the people answered, "That's fine." (25) Elijah told the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves. Prepare yours first, because there are more of you. Call on the name of your god, but don't set the wood on fire." (26) They took the bull he gave them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon. They said, "Baal, answer us!" But there wasn't a sound or an answer. So they danced around the altar they had made. (27) At noon Elijah started to make fun of them. "Shout louder, since he is a god. Maybe he's thinking, relieving himself, or traveling! Maybe he's sleeping, and you have to wake him!" (28) So they shouted louder. They also cut themselves with swords and spears until their blood flowed. (This is what their ritual called for.) (29) In the afternoon they continued to rant and rave until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no sound, no answer, no attention given to them. (30) Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come over here." So all the people came to him. He rebuilt the LORD's  ( ) altar that had been torn down. (31) Elijah took 12 stones, one for each of the tribes named after Jacob's sons. (The LORD  ( ) had spoken his word to Jacob: "Your name will be Israel.") (32) Elijah built an altar in the LORD's  ( ) name with those stones. He also made a trench that could hold 12 quarts of grain around the altar. (33) He arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and put it on the wood. (34) He said, "Fill four (large) jars with water. Pour the water on the offering and on the wood." Then he said, "Do it again," and they did it again. Then he said, "Do it a third time," and they did it a third time. (35) The water flowed around the altar, and even the trench was filled with water. (36) When it was time to offer the sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward. He said, "LORD  ( ) God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make known today that you are God in Israel and that I'm your servant and have done all these things by your instructions. (37) Answer me, LORD  ( )! Answer me! Then these people will know that you, LORD  ( ), are God and that you are winning back their hearts." (38) So a fire from the LORD  ( ) fell down and consumed the burnt offering, wood, stones, and dirt. The fire even dried up the water that was in the trench. (39) All the people saw it and immediately bowed down to the ground. "The LORD  ( ) is God!" they said. "The LORD  ( ) is God!" (40) Elijah told them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let any of them escape." The people seized them, and Elijah took them to the Kishon River and slaughtered them there.

1 Kings 18:17-40 NWT 17 And it came about that, as soon as A´hab saw E·li´jah, A´hab immediately said to him: “Is this you, the bringer of ostracism upon Israel?” 18 To this he said: “I have not brought ostracism upon Israel, but you and the house of your father have, because YOU men have left the commandments of Jehovah  ( ), and you went following the Ba´als. 19 And now send, collect together all Israel to me at Mount Car´mel and also the four hundred and fifty prophets of Ba´al and the four hundred prophets of the sacred pole, who are eating at the table of Jez´e·bel.” 20 And A´hab proceeded to send among all the sons of Israel and collect the prophets together at Mount Car´mel. 21 Then E·li´jah approached all the people and said: “How long will YOU be limping upon two different opinions? If Jehovah  ( ) is the [true] God, go following him; but if Ba´al is, go following him.” And the people did not say a word in answer to him. 22 And E·li´jah went on to say to the people: “I myself have been left as a prophet of Jehovah  ( ), I alone, while the prophets of Ba´al are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Now let them give us two young bulls, and let them choose for themselves one young bull and cut it in pieces and put it upon the wood, but they should not put fire to it. And I myself shall dress the other young bull, and I must place it upon the wood, but I shall not put fire to it. 24 And YOU must call upon the name of YOUR god, and I, for my part, shall call upon the name of Jehovah  ( ); and it must occur that the [true] God that answers by fire is the [true] God.” To this all the people answered and said: “The thing is good.” 25 E·li´jah now said to the prophets of Ba´al: “Choose for yourselves one young bull and dress it first, because YOU are the majority; and call upon the name of YOUR god, but YOU must not put fire to it.” 26 Accordingly they took the young bull that he gave them. Then they dressed it, and they kept calling upon the name of Ba´al from morning till noon, saying: “O Ba´al, answer us!” But there was no voice, and there was no one answering. And they kept limping around the altar that they had made. 27 And it came about at noon that E·li´jah began to mock them and say: “Call at the top of YOUR voice, for he is a god; for he must be concerned with a matter, and he has excrement and has to go to the privy. Or maybe he is asleep and ought to wake up!” 28 And they began calling at the top of their voice and cutting themselves according to their custom with daggers and with lances, until they caused blood to flow out upon them. 29 And it came about that, as soon as noon was past and they continued behaving as prophets until the going up of the grain offering, there was no voice, and there was no one answering, and there was no paying of attention. 30 At length E·li´jah said to all the people: “Approach me.” So all the people approached him. Then he proceeded to mend the altar of Jehovah  ( ) that was torn down. 31 So E·li´jah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom Jehovah's  ( ) word had come, saying: “Israel is what your name will become.” 32 And he went on to build the stones into an altar in the name of Jehovah  ( ) and to make a trench, of about the area sowed with two seah measures of seed, all around the altar. 33 After that he put the pieces of wood in order and cut the young bull in pieces and placed it upon the pieces of wood. He now said: “FILL four large jars with water and pour it upon the burnt offering and upon the pieces of wood.” 34 Then he said: “Do it again.” So they did it again. But he said: “Do it a third time.” So they did it a third time. 35 Thus the water went all around the altar, and the trench also he filled with water. 36 And it came about at the time that the grain offering goes up that E·li´jah the prophet began to approach and say: “O Jehovah  ( ), the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that you are God in Israel and I am your servant and it is by your word that I have done all these things. 37 Answer me, O Jehovah  ( ), answer me, that this people may know that you, Jehovah  ( ), are the [true] God and you yourself have turned their heart back.” 38 At that the fire of Jehovah  ( ) came falling and went eating up the burnt offering and the pieces of wood and the stones and the dust, and the water that was in the trench it licked up. 39 When all the people saw it, they immediately fell upon their faces and said: “Jehovah  ( ) is the [true] God! Jehovah  ( ) is the [true] God!” 40 Then E·li´jah said to them: “Seize the prophets of Ba´al! Do not let a single one of them escape!” At once they seized them, and E·li´jah then brought them down to the torrent valley of Ki´shon and slaughtered them there.

You are disobeying the LORD  ( ) commands and worshiping the idols of Baal. (19) Now order all the people of Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel. Bring along the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of the goddess Asherah who are supported by Queen Jezebel." (20) So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and the prophets of Baal to meet at Mount Carmel. (21) Elijah went up to the people and said, "How much longer will it take you to make up your minds? If the LORD  ( ) is God, worship him; but if Baal is God, worship him!" But the people didn't say a word. (22) Then Elijah said, "I am the only prophet of the LORD  ( ) still left, but there are 450 prophets of Baal. (23) Bring two bulls; let the prophets of Baal take one, kill it, cut it in pieces, and put it on the wood---but don't light the fire. I will do the same with the other bull. (24) Then let the prophets of Baal pray to their god, and I will pray to the LORD  ( ), and the one who answers by sending fire---he is God." The people shouted their approval. (25) Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Since there are so many of you, you take a bull and prepare it first. Pray to your god, but don't set fire to the wood." (26) They took the bull that was brought to them, prepared it, and prayed to Baal until noon. They shouted, "Answer us, Baal!" and kept dancing around the altar they had built. But no answer came. (27) At noon Elijah started making fun of them: "Pray louder! He is a god! Maybe he is day-dreaming or relieving himself, or perhaps he's gone off on a trip! Or maybe he's sleeping, and you've got to wake him up!" (28) So the prophets prayed louder and cut themselves with knives and daggers, according to their ritual, until blood flowed. (29) They kept on ranting and raving until the middle of the afternoon; but no answer came, not a sound was heard. (30) Then Elijah said to the people, "Come closer to me," and they all gathered around him. He set about repairing the altar of the LORD  ( ) which had been torn down. (31) He took twelve stones, one for each of the twelve tribes named for the sons of Jacob, the man to whom the LORD  ( ) had given the name Israel. (32) With these stones he rebuilt the altar for the worship of the LORD  ( ). He dug a trench around it, large enough to hold about four gallons of water. (33) Then he placed the wood on the altar, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the offering and the wood." They did so, (34) and he said, "Do it again"---and they did. "Do it once more," he said---and they did. (35) The water ran down around the altar and filled the trench. (36) At the hour of the afternoon sacrifice the prophet Elijah approached the altar and prayed, "O LORD  ( ), the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, prove now that you are the God of Israel and that I am your servant and have done all this at your command. (37) Answer me, LORD  ( ), answer me, so that this people will know that you, the LORD  ( ), are God and that you are bringing them back to yourself." (38) The LORD  ( ) sent fire down, and it burned up the sacrifice, the wood, and the stones, scorched the earth and dried up the water in the trench. (39) When the people saw this, they threw themselves on the ground and exclaimed, "The LORD  ( ) is God; the LORD  ( ) alone is God!" (40) Elijah ordered, "Seize the prophets of Baal; don't let any of them get away!" The people seized them all, and Elijah led them down to Kishon Brook and killed them.
