Jeremiah 51:29-39 CEV . . .The earth twists and turns in torment, because I have decided to make Babylonia a desert where no one can live, and I won't change my mind. (30) The Babylonian soldiers have lost their strength and courage. They stay in their fortresses, unable to fight, while the enemy breaks through the city gates, then sets their homes on fire. (31) One messenger after another announces to the king, "Babylon has been captured! (32) The enemy now controls the river crossings! The marshes are on fire! Your army has panicked!" (33) I am the LORD (יהוה) All-Powerful, the God of Israel, and I make this promise-- "Soon Babylon will be leveled and packed down like a threshing place at harvest time." (34) The people of Jerusalem say, "King Nebuchadnezzar made us panic. That monster stuffed himself with us and our treasures, leaving us empty-- he gobbled down what he wanted and spit out the rest. (35) The people of Babylonia harmed some of us and killed others. Now, LORD (יהוה), make them pay!" (36) My people, I am on your side, and I will take revenge on Babylon. I will cut off its water supply, and its stream will dry up. (37) Babylon will be a pile of rubble where only jackals live. People will laugh, but they will be afraid to walk among the ruins. (38) The Babylonians roar and growl like young lions. (39) And since they are hungry, I will give them a banquet. They will celebrate, get drunk, then fall asleep, never to wake up!
Jeremiah 51:29-39 GNB . . .The earth trembles and shakes because the LORD (יהוה) is carrying out his plan to make Babylonia a desert, where no one lives. (30) The Babylonian soldiers have stopped fighting and remain in their forts. They have lost their courage and have become helpless. The city gates are broken down, and the houses are on fire. (31) Messenger after messenger runs to tell the king of Babylonia that his city has been broken into from every side. (32) The enemy have captured the river crossing and have set the fortresses on fire. The Babylonian soldiers have panicked. (33) Soon the enemy will cut them down and trample them like grain on a threshing place. I, the LORD (יהוה) Almighty, the God of Israel, have spoken." (34) The king of Babylonia cut Jerusalem up and ate it. He emptied the city like a jar; like a monster he swallowed it. He took what he wanted and threw the rest away. (35) Let the people of Zion say, "May Babylonia be held responsible for the violence done to us!" Let the people of Jerusalem say, "May Babylonia be held responsible for what we have suffered!" (36) And so the LORD (יהוה) said to the people of Jerusalem, "I will take up your cause and will make your enemies pay for what they did to you. I will dry up the source of Babylonia's water and make its rivers go dry. (37) That country will become a pile of ruins where wild animals live. It will be a horrible sight; no one will live there, and all who see it will be terrified. (38) The Babylonians all roar like lions and growl like lion cubs. (39) Are they greedy? I will prepare them a feast and make them drunk and happy. They will go to sleep and never wake up.

(30) The warriors of Babylon have ceased fighting; they remain in their strongholds; their strength has failed; they have become women; her dwellings are on fire; her bars are broken. (31) One runner runs to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to tell the king of Babylon that his city is taken on every side; (32) the fords have been seized, the marshes are burned with fire, and the soldiers are in panic. (33) For thus says the LORD (יהוה) of hosts, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time when it is trodden; yet a little while and the time of her harvest will come." (34) "Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me; he has crushed me; he has made me an empty vessel; he has swallowed me like a monster; he has filled his stomach with my delicacies; he has rinsed me out. (36) Therefore thus says the LORD (יהוה): "Behold, I will plead your cause and take vengeance for you. I will dry up her sea and make her fountain dry, (37) and Babylon shall become a heap of ruins, the haunt of jackals, a horror and a hissing, without inhabitant. (38) "They shall roar together like lions; they shall growl like lions' cubs. (39) While they are inflamed I will prepare them a feast and make them drunk, that they may become merry, then sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake, declares the LORD (יהוה).

(30) The mighty men of Babylon have stopped fighting. They have dwelt in strongholds; their might has withered; they became as women; they have burned their houses, her bars are broken. (31) A runner shall run to meet a runner, and a herald to meet a herald, to announce to the king of Babylon that his city is captured from end to end, (32) and that the fords are captured. And they have burned the reeds with fire, and the men of war are terrified. (33) For so says Jehovah (יהוה) of Hosts, the God of Israel, The daughter of Babylon is like a grain floor, it is time to tread her. Yet a little while, and the time of her harvest will come. (34) Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has devoured us. He has crushed us. He has made us an empty vessel. He has swallowed us like a jackal. He has filled his belly with delicacies. He has thrown me out. (35) The violence done to me and to my flesh is on Babylon, the one living in Zion shall say. And Jerusalem shall say, My blood shall be on those living in Chaldea. (36) So Jehovah (יהוה) says this: Behold, I will strive for you and take vengeance for you. And I will dry up her sea and make her well dry. (37) And Babylon shall become heaps, a home for jackals, a horror and a hissing, without a dweller. (38) They shall roar together like lions, they shall growl like lions' cubs. (39) In their heat, I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunk so that they exult and sleep a never ending sleep and never awaken, says Jehovah (יהוה).
