Nimrod founded ancient Babylon around 2800-3000 BCE and it became man's first political empire. For over 2000 years the City was a commercial trade center of the world. Situated astride the great Euphrates River, with walls surrounding the huge City on both sides of the river, and with river gates in the inner walls along it's banks running through the great city. On Oct 5, 539 BCE, just as prophets Jeremiah and imprisoned Daniel prophesied, (
Dan 5:5-28) Babylon had a great drunken feast with the river gates left open. Cyrus the Great's army engineers diverted the River upstream and his troops entered the city by the riverbed. They went quickly through the city killing all who opposed. In that one night, they captured the great City and it's palace and put Babylonian King Belshazzar to death. Belshazzar had taken the Jews captive and Cyrus was used by God to set them free, (
2 Chron 36:22-23) and to return them to their homeland. (
Isa 45:1-2;
Jer 51:30-32) Babylon had also become a city of much false worship. Any kind of vile God any wicked person might want to worship could be found in her. (
Jer 50:38) In referring to God's justice being revealed in our end times, (
Zep 1:14-2:3) it becomes evident why God would refer to today's world empire of
false religion, intermixed with the world's commerce, as Babylon the Great.
